Wednesday MLS Recap: Stars Don't Shine

Week 11 of MLS kicked off this week with NYCFC taking on Toronto, and the lackluster Red Bulls taking on last place Chicago Fire. In New York, what was supposed to be a duel between big named strikers, turned out to be more of an even match, with midfielders Will Johnson and Kwadwo Poku scoring for their teams in a 1-1 draw. Poku's goal in the 16th minute was a spectacular curled effort from just inside the box, beating Clint Irwin at his far post. Then in the 42nd minute, a wonderful cross by the rookie, Mo Babouli found Josh Williams at the back post, who was just able to keep the ball in play and leave an open tap in for Johnson to level the scores. The scoring ended there, and NYCFC fans may feel after the game that David Villa should've gotten that start ahead of Patrick Mullins, but his impact was very little even after he was subbed on in the 74th minute, only registering one shot in his 17 minutes on the field. Toronto on the other hand, were very unlucky not to get all 3 points, having 7 shots on target, but Josh Saunders' 6 saves, including a 1-on-1 with Giovinco and a good free kick save, left them with a single point. A disappointing two points dropped by Toronto at home, to say the least.

Hopefully you chose to watch the 6:00 game last night and didn't wait for the 6:30 game between New York Red Bulls and the Chicago Fire to start. The Red Bulls had only one shot on target the entire 90 minutes, and Chicago only had two, but sometimes two isn't better than one (yes that is a Boys Like Girls reference). NYRB's one shot on target resulted in the game's only goal, courtesy of Mike Grella in the 58th minute. The red side of New York has Chicago defender Jonathan Campbell to thank, as his errant back pass was intercepted by BWP who found Lloyd Sam, who was able to slot in Grella for an easy tap in and a very fortunate 3 points.

Overall, a rather mediocre and mundane midweek display, let's hope the New York derby, the Cali Clasico and the rematch of the 2013 MLS Cup Final, bring some spice into this week of MLS soccer.

Week 11 MLS Fantasy Preview: Planning Ahead

Week 11 begins today at 7 EST/6 CST with Toronto facing off against New York City, and it's time to set those lineups we normally forget about during the week days. This week, it's best to start focusing on Week 13, which has 8 teams missing out and a chance to take advantage of your fellow league members who don't realize this (thanks Reddit for not making me one of these people).

Last week got me a season high 131 points, which could've been more if it wasn't for choosing to captain Adi instead of Diaz, or Valeri, or Giovinco, or even Ousted, who finished with more points than the Nigerian international. Anyhow, hindsight is always 20/20 and we move on to this week. Working towards the anomaly that is Week 13, I decided to drop Adi and Ousted, both players don't play then and subsequently play each other this week, something that would be very counterproductive to have in the lineup. Thus, I picked up NYCFC's main (and only, if we are being honest) goal-scoring threat, David Villa and Chicago goalkeeper Matt Lampson. Both of them are decent point getters week in and week out, playing two games each, and can be manipulated in the coming weeks. Here is a look at the changed lineup for this week:

As you can see, 5 of the 11 players won't be playing come June 1st, but the plan is to take one 4 point hit in one of the next two weeks and the boys will be ready to go. I am rather unsure whether to drop my Chicago duo first or the Montreal duo, as Montreal plays the Galaxy next week, and Chicago is... well, Chicago. ______________________________________________________________________________

Each week that I talk MLS Fantasy I want to highlight 3 key categories of players: Spotlight Stars, Quick Drops, and the Hipster Picks. Each made to help pick up those guaranteed big point getters, drop the flops and find that diamond in the rough.

Spotlight Stars:
  • Sebastian Giovinco
  • David Villa
  • This week is a little more obvious than others because Toronto plays two games, and with 70% of MLS Fantasy owners having this man in their squad, its obvious Giovinco is going to rack up some big numbers. He also has a little extra chip on his shoulder since he isn't included in the Italian Euro 2016 squad, so he definitely has a point to prove. The other man in the spotlight this week, David Villa, is the man behind NYCFC's current hot streak, and you can bet with certainty that he will bag at least one goal over this next week, making him an easy lock.

    Quick Drops:
  • Fanendo Adi
  • Maximilano Urruti
  • David Accam
  • Don't mess with questionables this week. Adi didn't train early in the week after the knock he received in the second half of his last match, and at best, I believe you only get a few minutes out of him as a sub, you are better off using that big money elsewhere. The exact same can be said for Urruti as well, except, ya know, he isn't as good and doesn't hold as much value as Adi. Accam is coming back from injury this week, and will play some part in both their DGW matches this week, but I can't see him being in top form after being out for so long.

    Hipster Picks:
  • Bradley Wright-Phillips
  • CJ Sapong
  • Josh Saunders
  • Starting from the top of the list, BWP doesn't seem like a hipster pick, but his form early on caused him to drop in price and fantasy owners have since steered clear. That was until he became consistent again in the last month, and with two games this week, he could prove to be very fruitful. Philly plays DC this week, and while everyone else is pinning after the other big dogs, Sapong's goal record is nothing short of quality. I can see him getting one this week, and for sure one next week in his DGW. Finally, Josh Saunders. Okay, he may not be the best, but with the way the goalkeeper scoring system works, the fact he plays two games this week, AND he won't be effected by Week 13, he may be a standout choice.

If you were like me and wondering what some of the other leagues were, here is a little guide for them:
    • PDL - Premier Development League. Part of the 4th level of the soccer pyramid, 61 US based teams, 6 Candian teams.
    • NPSL - National Premier Soccer League. Also part of the 4th level of the pyramid. 85 teams.
    • USASA - United States Adult Soccer Association. The USASA technically includes the PDL and NPSL (as stated by the Wikipedia article), but the rest of the association includes leagues that include the 35 year old from the bar down the street that played in the USL once, and that 18 year old who wants to play at a high level but probably isn't going to play college ball.
    • USSSA - a non profit organization, the United States Specialty Sports Association is a "multi sport governing body looking to grow and develop soccer" at the youth and adult level.
